## Who they are

Doña Francisca is a woman of noble birth and exemplary conduct whose temper has been honed by years of worry over a sailor's life. She tends Don Alonso with real devotion, but never in silence, and her tirades against Villeneuve, Gravina, and the whole naval profession fill the house. Her opposition to his final voyage is both practical and personal, and her fury gives the domestic scenes their comic and painful edge.
