Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Picture Theory of Language
The central thesis that propositions are logical pictures of reality, sharing a logical form with the states of affairs they depict, and that understanding a proposition means knowing the state of affairs it presents.
Limits of Language and Thought
The idea that language and thought are bounded by logical form, and that what lies beyond—the mystical, ethical, and metaphysical—cannot be spoken about meaningfully but only shown.
Logical Atomism
The view that the world consists of atomic facts composed of simple objects, and that language can be analyzed into elementary propositions that directly picture these facts.
Nonsense and Meaning
The distinction between meaningful propositions (which picture possible states of affairs) and nonsensical ones (which arise from misuse of language or giving no meaning to signs), including the status of tautologies and contradictions.
Logic and Tautology
The treatment of logical truths as tautologies that say nothing about the world but show the structure of language and thought, with logic being a condition for sense rather than a body of substantive truths.
Solipsism and the Subject
The claim that the metaphysical subject does not belong to the world but is a limit of it, and that solipsism, when strictly thought through, coincides with realism.
Ethics and the Mystical
The view that value, ethics, and the sense of the world lie outside the world of facts and cannot be expressed in meaningful propositions, only shown or experienced.
Critique of Traditional Philosophy
The diagnosis that many philosophical problems arise from misunderstanding the logic of language and from attempting to say what can only be shown, leading to nonsense.
