# Melchior Thalberg — Tracks in the Snow character guide

> Melchior Thalberg in Tracks in the Snow by Godfrey R. Benson.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Thalberg, Mr. Thalberg

**First appearance:** 0001-tracks-in-the-snow

## Snapshot

A small, fair German businessman and amateur singer, Thalberg's charm at the piano hides correspondence and movements he would rather not explain.

## Who they are

Thalberg is the quiet guest whose Schubert and Schumann songs linger in the narrator's memory long after the evening at Peters's house. A City man of modest appearance, he seems an unlikely agent for delicate errands, yet Callaghan's directory trick exposes his Ferndale Crescent address and his Dutch and Baghdadi correspondence. His panic when confronted reveals a man of alarm rather than guile, and his role in the case remains uncomfortably ambiguous.
