Heroism and Perseverance

Gilliatt embodies heroic endurance, persisting against impossible odds through sheer will and determination, as described in the text: 'Perseverance is to courage what the wheel is to the lever; it is the continual renewing of the centre of support.'

Gilliatt's successful navigation of the heavy sloop to Herm and back, despite the challenge and a strong breeze, demonstrates his heroic seamanship and determination.

Mess Lethierry's lifelong dedication to rescuing ships and men, often in dangerous conditions, exemplifies heroic perseverance and selflessness.

Lethierry's intrepidity and refusal to yield to the sea or any opposition highlight his heroic perseverance.

Despite being half-ruined by Rantaine's betrayal, Lethierry does not lose heart and boldly invests in the revolutionary steam vessel.
