> Leo E. Miller in Through the Brazilian Wilderness by Theodore Roosevelt.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Miller, Leo Miller

**First appearance:** 0005-i-the-start

## Snapshot

A young Indiana-born mammalogist with literary as well as scientific training, he joins the expedition from the Guiana forests and keeps a small owl as a pet.

## Who they are

Miller arrives at Barbados from the Guiana forests, a young naturalist whose enthusiasm and writing both recommend him. On the river he and Cherrie trap tayras, opossums, and other small mammals, and he becomes the special protector of a tame little owl that signals for him when he enters the cabin. His work is the expedition's scientific counterweight to its physical ordeal, and his partnership with Cherrie gives the collecting its method and its small domestic tendernesses.
