First appearance: i the start
As a supporting figure in Through the Brazilian Wilderness, Lieutenant João Lyra is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Assistant to Colonel Rondon, acknowledged in the dedication.
Lyra belongs to Rondon's cadre of Brazilian officers — Amilcar, Mello, Lauriadó, and the doctor Cajazeira among them — whose surveying and discipline make the expedition possible. Roosevelt inscribes the book to them as 'Companions in Scientific Work and in the Exploration of the Wilderness,' placing them beside Rondon in his esteem. Their presence makes the journey a joint Brazilian-American enterprise rather than a presidential excursion, and their local knowledge is the quiet infrastructure beneath every mile the party gains.
