# Anthony Fiala — Through the Brazilian Wilderness character guide

> Anthony Fiala in Through the Brazilian Wilderness by Theodore Roosevelt.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Fiala, Mr. Fiala

**First appearance:** 0005-i-the-start

## Snapshot

A veteran of Arctic exploration who outfitted Roosevelt's expedition, packing tents, food, and cooking gear with a precision that astonished even Colonel Rondon.

## Who they are

Fiala is the expedition's quartermaster and photographer, a man whose quarter-century of arduous wilderness travel has taught him exactly what a party needs and how little of it they can carry. When Rondon inspected the assembled supplies at Corumbá, he could suggest nothing — a quiet vindication for a man who had never before set foot in the tropics. His competence frees the expedition to leave civilization behind, making him the unglamorous hinge on which the whole journey turns.
