## Snapshot

An ageing army doctor who reads hair-loss cures aloud from the newspaper, pockets meaningless notes, and calls Irina his white bird with helpless tenderness.

## Who they are

Chebutikin drifts through the household as its resident physician and unofficial uncle, dispensing absurd remedies and half-finished thoughts while carrying a private guilt over a patient's death. His affection for the Prozorov sisters is genuine but ineffectual, expressed in kisses on Irina's hands and a tenderness he can't translate into action. He anchors the play's mood of comic futility, showing how a man can love a family deeply and still be unable to save anyone in it.
