# What Family and Community means in There Is Confusion

> The Marshall family and their extended network provide a foundation of support, values, and resilience, illustrating how kinship and community bonds help individuals navigate racial oppression and personal crises.

## Explanation

The Marshall family and their extended network provide a foundation of support, values, and resilience, illustrating how kinship and community bonds help individuals navigate racial oppression and personal crises.

The close bond between Joanna and her father Joel is central, as is Joel's sacrifice for his mother and his role as a provider for his family.

The Marshall family dynamics, including sibling rivalry and parental support, shape Joanna's character and ambitions, with Joel's guidance and Sylvia's contrasting nature playing key roles.

The intertwined histories of the white and black Bye families highlight the legacy of slavery and the bonds within the black community, such as Belle Bye's support for Isaiah's independence.

The Bye family's history is closely tied to the white Byes, and the black Philadelphia community closely monitors Meriwether's decline, reflecting the tight-knit nature of colored society.
