# Ethel Monticue — The Young Visiters character guide > Ethel Monticue in The Young Visiters by Daisy Ashford. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Ethel, Miss Monticue, Miss Ethel Monticue **First appearance:** 0001-the-young-visiters ## Snapshot A dainty young lady from Northumberland with a taste for rich satin, silver-crested note paper, and any gentleman who might improve her prospects. ## Who they are Ethel arrives at the Crystal Palace on Bernard's arm, all blue velvet and ruge, and promptly begins sizing up the room. Her affections shift with the furniture, yet her ambition is oddly innocent: she wants a grand wedding, a tall cake, and a good lot of children. Her peevish exchange with a disguised Salteena shows how quickly charm can curdle into snobbery. ## Relationships ### [Bernard Clark](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/bernard_clark) _romantic_ Bernard is deeply in love with Ethel and pursues her romantically, though she is initially torn between him and Mr. Salteena. ### [Mr. Salteena](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/mr_salteena) _romantic_ Ethel is courted by Mr. Salteena but ultimately rejects him in favor of Bernard, causing tension and heartbreak. ### [Earl of Clincham](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/earl_of_clincham) _social_ The Earl is a distant, aristocratic acquaintance of Ethel, interacting with her mainly at social events. ### [Francis Minnit](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/francis_minnit) _social_ Ethel and Francis are casual acquaintances, likely meeting through Bernard or social events. ### [Lady Gay Finchling](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/lady_gay_finchling) _friendship_ Lady Gay Finchling is a friend and confidante to Ethel, offering advice and companionship. ### [Horace](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/horace) _professional_ Horace serves Ethel in a minor domestic capacity, such as delivering messages or assisting with tasks. ### [Alf](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/alf) _professional_ Alf is a servant or helper who interacts with Ethel in a domestic or service capacity. ### [Bernard Clark](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/bernard_clark) _romantic_ Bernard is deeply in love with Ethel and pursues her romantically, though she is initially torn between him and Mr. Salteena. ### [Bernard Clark](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/characters/bernard_clark) _romantic_ Bernard is deeply in love with Ethel and pursues her romantically, though she is initially torn between him and Mr. Salteena. ## In the story ### [The Young Visiters Or, Mr. Salteena's Plan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/chapters/the-young-visiters) A young lady invited by Mr. Salteena to join the trip, indicating a close acquaintance. ### [I: Quite a Young Girl](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/chapters/i-quite-a-young-girl) A young girl of 17 with fair hair and blue eyes, wearing a blue velvet frock and black straw hat, she comes down to breakfast first and prepares Mr. Salteena's egg. ### [Starting Gaily](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_young_visiters_se/chapters/ii-starting-gaily) Applies red rouge to her pale face, wears a royal blue velvet coat, and is nervous about social etiquette.
