## Snapshot

Geologist of the Northern Party, whose scientific patience and unflappable nerve are tested when his small group is stranded on the ice for an Antarctic winter.

## Who they are

Priestley is one of the expedition's scientific staff, a geologist whose work takes him away from the main polar push and into the expedition's most isolated corners. His distinctive value lies in the tension between the orderly habits of a scientist and the raw improvisation survival demands when a party is cut off with dwindling supplies. His experience anchors the reader's sense of how far the expedition's reach extends beyond the famous southern journey.
