# Herbert Ponting — The Worst Journey in the World character guide

> Herbert Ponting in The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ponting

**First appearance:** 0003-the-worst-journey-in-the-world

## Snapshot

The official photographer, whose camera and darkroom turn the expedition's rawest moments into images that will outlive every man who posed for them.

## Who they are

Ponting is the expedition's image-maker, the man whose lenses and plates give the venture its visual memory. His work sits in tension with the brutal physical demands of the journey, since a camera requires care that the ice rarely permits. He matters because the book itself is a record, and Ponting's photographs are the silent counterpart to Cherry-Garrard's prose.
