## Snapshot

The expedition's biologist, forever at the rail with net and microscope, finding wonder in Portuguese men-of-war while others merely see an empty ocean.

## Who they are

Nelson is the biologist whose curiosity turns the long sea voyage into a moving laboratory of whales, plankton, and drifting sea creatures. His enthusiasm for the natural world sets him apart from the naval officers and sledgers, and his catches become small events in the ship's daily life. He represents the expedition's scientific heart, the reason the journey is more than a race to a point on the map.
