# Patrick Keohane — The Worst Journey in the World character guide

> Patrick Keohane in The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Keohane

**First appearance:** 0003-the-worst-journey-in-the-world

## Snapshot

An Irish seaman and sledger whose steady pull on the ropes and understated endurance embody the unglamorous backbone of the expedition's depot-laying work.

## Who they are

Keohane belongs to the supporting parties that haul food and fuel across the Barrier so the polar advance can go further and lighter. He is one of the men whose labour is measured in miles and pounds rather than headlines, and whose stamina is tested by the same blizzards that break the stronger. His presence reminds the reader that the great southern journey was built on the backs of sailors who never expected to reach the Pole themselves.
