# Tryggve Gran — The Worst Journey in the World character guide

> Tryggve Gran in The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Gran, Gran on ski

**First appearance:** 0003-the-worst-journey-in-the-world

## Snapshot

A Norwegian ski expert recruited to teach the British how to move on snow, whose easy mastery of the ice quietly shames men who learned too late.

## Who they are

Gran brings the practical skiing knowledge of a country that understands polar travel, and he is often the man whose technique the British party wishes it had absorbed sooner. The friction between his native competence and the expedition's improvised methods runs beneath the surface of the sledging accounts. His presence sharpens the book's recurring question of whether experience or endurance matters more on the ice.
