## Snapshot

Petty officer and powerful sledger, the biggest and heaviest man in the polar party, whose strength was both his pride and his undoing.

## Who they are

Evans was the burly seaman who led Snatcher and pulled his share with a sailor's blunt competence, one of the five chosen for the final southern march. Cherry notes the cruel arithmetic of the sledge: the heaviest man burns the most fuel and eats no extra ration, so the very physique that made Evans formidable left him vulnerable as supplies dwindled. His slow decline becomes one of the book's most painful threads, a human measure of what the plateau exacted from even its strongest.
