## Snapshot

A geologist who endures the Terra Nova's leaking, rolling cabins with wry humor, later turning his Antarctic fieldwork into a lifelong scientific legacy.

## Who they are

Debenham is one of the expedition's geologists, thrown into the cramped, half-flooded world of the ship's scientists where water pours into upper bunks and every meal is a small battle. His eye for the absurdity of shipboard discomfort gives the early chapters much of their comic texture. He matters because his scientific ambitions embody the expedition's larger purpose beyond the pole itself.
