Concepts
Ideas that structure The Works of Max Beerbohm by Max Beerbohm — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Dandyism and Aestheticism
The book extensively explores dandyism as a serious art form, exemplified by Beau Brummell's devotion to dress as a creative act, and the broader Aesthetic movement's pursuit of beauty and artifice over nature and morality.
Artifice vs. Nature
Beerbohm champions artifice—cosmetics, elaborate dress, and social performance—as superior to naturalness, arguing that surface and soul should be separated, and that the Victorian era's 'natural' woman was ineffectual and charmless.
Critique of Modernity and Progress
The author laments the loss of beauty, tradition, and individuality in modern life, criticizing industrialization, the blending of social classes, and the decline of vibrant, decadent society into a weak, uniform, and 'feebleness' age.
Royalty and Public Perception
The book examines the role of princes and monarchs, contrasting the idealized, ornamental function of royalty (e.g., the 'Good Prince') with the flawed humanity of figures like George IV, and how public judgment is often distorted by moral bias or superficiality.
The Artist as Detached Observer
Beerbohm advocates for a life of intellectual contemplation and imaginative withdrawal from active experience, as seen in 'Diminuendo,' where the narrator chooses a quiet suburban life to observe the world from a distance rather than engage in its chaotic pursuits.
Gender Roles and Womanhood
The text presents a highly traditional view of women, arguing they should remain passive, decorative, and intellectually subtle rather than engaging in athletics or public life, with artifice (cosmetics) serving to preserve their mysterious and influential power.
Historical Revisionism and Style
Beerbohm deliberately challenges established historical judgments (e.g., Thackeray's condemnation of George IV), using elegant, ironic prose to rehabilitate figures and argue that style and aesthetic merit should outweigh conventional moral or factual assessments.
