# Why does Dorothy go to Oz?

> The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

## Answer

Dorothy does not choose Oz — a cyclone lifts her farmhouse and drops it in Munchkin country. She goes because weather and accident transport her; she stays on the road because Munchkins and Good Witch Glinda (of the North) advise seeing the Wizard in Emerald City for help getting home.

Motivation afterward is return, not tourism. Oz is obstacle course and friendship school. Answers should separate involuntary arrival from voluntary journey along brick road — students often conflate “going to Oz” with seeking adventure; Dorothy seeks Kansas.
