# How does The Wonderful Wizard of Oz develop the theme of The Illusion of Power and Authority?

> The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

## Answer

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum develops The Illusion of Power and Authority across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The Wizard of Oz is revealed to be a humbug—a common man using tricks and deception—demonstrating that perceived power and authority are often illusions maintained by fear and spectacle.

The Guardian's descriptions of Oz as a shape-shifting, all-powerful wizard who never shows his face hint at the deceptive nature of his authority.

Oz's shape-shifting and theatrical demands reveal that his power is based on deception and intimidation rather than genuine ability.

The Golden Cap's power over the Winged Monkeys and the story of Gayelette's enchantment illustrate how authority can be imposed and manipulated.
