The Wonderful Wizard of Oz · Concept

Home and belonging

Dorothy’s journey through Oz ends when she learns Kansas was home all along — Baum pairs wonder with longing for ordinary love.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz opens in gray Kansas — Aunt Em and Uncle Henry worn by drought — then explodes into color. Yet Dorothy’s motive stays steady: return home. Companions want brains, heart, courage; Dorothy wants Em. Glinda’s silver shoes (ruby in the famous film) can carry her once she understands desire’s truth: home is not escape from work but the place love lives.

Home-and-belonging avoids calling Kansas “better” in every way — it is poorer and duller — but emotionally central. Baum wrote for American children who might migrate, dream, and still need roots. Use cyclone chapter and final wish with Glinda to frame entire plot as odyssey returning inward.
