The Wonderful Adventures of Nils · Question
How does The Wonderful Adventures of Nils develop the theme of Freedom vs. Confinement?
Answer
The Wonderful Adventures of Nils by Selma Lagerlöf develops Freedom vs. Confinement across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.
The contrast between the wild, free life of the geese and the confined, rule-bound existence of humans is explored, with characters like the Laplanders and the girl who chooses mountain life over valley society.
The tame geese are tempted by the wild geese's call to freedom, and Nils's leap onto the gander represents a break from his confined life on the farm.
Nils feels a sense of liberation as he rides high above the earth, escaping his troubles and the confines of his previous life.
Nils is trapped in the tree all night, confined by the fox's presence, while the geese fly free at dawn.
