Humanity and Compassion

Themes of self-sacrifice, helping others in need, and the value of compassion are central, as seen in characters like the man from Hede who risks his life for an old woman, and Nils' growing concern for his animal companions.

Nils's cruelty toward the elf and his parents' wish for him to have a better disposition highlight the theme of developing compassion.

Nils reflects on his past companions Osa and little Mats, showing his capacity for human connection even in his transformed state.

Nils shows compassion by helping Morten into the water, and Morten reciprocates by catching food for Nils, forming a bond of mutual care.

The farmer's decision to free the squirrel family shows compassion for animals, while Nils's actions demonstrate empathy and care.
