# Sir Cecil Fanshaw — The Wisdom of Father Brown character guide

> Sir Cecil Fanshaw in The Wisdom of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Fanshaw, Sir Cecil

**First appearance:** 0008-the-purple-wig

## Snapshot

A baronet caught up in a mystery of a purple wig, whose respectable standing makes the strangeness around him all the more disquieting.

## Who they are

Sir Cecil Fanshaw belongs to the class of English gentlemen whose names open doors and whose composure is expected to be unshakeable, which is precisely why the odd affair of the purple wig unsettles everyone involved. He is drawn into a case where appearance and identity refuse to line up, and where the trappings of rank become part of the puzzle rather than a solution to it. His involvement gives the story its social texture, and its sense that even the well-placed are not safe from the absurd.
