# Signor Muscari — The Wisdom of Father Brown character guide

> Signor Muscari in The Wisdom of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Muscari, The great Muscari, The poet Muscari

**First appearance:** 0003-the-paradise-of-thieves

## Snapshot

A flamboyant Italian poet who insists the mountain pass is dangerous, crosses it anyway, and may be either the brigands' ally or their target.

## Who they are

Signor Muscari is the black-maned, theatrical poet who scandalises the practical banker Harrogate and charms his daughter with talk of southern fire and daggers. He defies Ezza's cheerful denial of brigandage by declaring he will cross the pass tomorrow, and he joins the family's journey with a boisterous courage that may be bravado or something else. His ambiguous role — poet, possible thief, possible protector — keeps the reader guessing who is really in danger.
