## Who they are

Flambeau walks into a fairy-tale town with a sword-stick in his hand and a past the police would very much like to discuss, and he is the one who tells Father Brown that this is the only place in Europe where a man was ever shot without firearms. He is the worldly half of the partnership: the man who knows how crimes are really done, and who has chosen, for reasons the stories only half reveal, to stand on the other side of the confessional now. His presence gives the mysteries their glamour and their danger.
