# Father Brown — The Wisdom of Father Brown character guide > Father Brown in The Wisdom of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Brown, the Reverend Brown, The Reverend Father Brown, the cleric Brown, Father, the Pendragons Father Brown, Mr. Brown, The Rev. Mr. Brown **First appearance:** 0001-the-wisdom-of-father-brown ## Snapshot A short, shapeless Catholic priest whose shabby umbrella and beaming bewilderment hide a mind that reads souls the way criminologists read clues. ## Who they are Father Brown arrives in Scarborough like a harmless sea-beast shambling into Dr. Orion Hood's terribly tidy consulting rooms, all clerical black and breathless geniality, and promptly asks the great criminologist to solve a problem no scientist would dignify: whether two young parishioners should marry. Where Hood sees a case, Brown sees people, and his refusal to separate the two is the quiet engine of every mystery he touches. His genius is not deduction but sympathy, which makes him the most disarming detective in England. ## Relationships ### [Flambeau](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_wisdom_of_father_brown_se/characters/flambeau) _friendship_ Father Brown is a moral mentor and friend to the reformed thief Flambeau, often working together to solve mysteries. ### [Sir Cecil Fanshaw](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_wisdom_of_father_brown_se/characters/sir_cecil_fanshaw) _professional_ Father Brown interacts with Sir Cecil Fanshaw as a detective and client in a case involving a mysterious death. ### [Admiral Pendragon](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_wisdom_of_father_brown_se/characters/admiral_pendragon) _professional_ Admiral Pendragon seeks Father Brown's help in unraveling a strange incident involving his household. ### [M.
