## Who they are

Ezza Montano is the legendary brigand whose name haunts the Apennine passes, spoken of alongside Robin Hood. Posing as a curious courier in the employ of the banker Harrogate, he watches the golden Ethel with a gaze more baffling than the poet Muscari's open admiration. His enigmatic smile and gloomy talk of getting on suggest a man playing a longer game than anyone at the hotel suspects.
