**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dr. Hood, The great Orion Hood, Hood, Orion Hood

## Snapshot

A celebrated criminologist whose spotless Scarborough consulting rooms and colder logic meet their match when a shabby little priest asks him to untangle a love affair.

## Who they are

Dr. Orion Hood is the eminent specialist in moral disorders whose sea-front chambers, chained classics and cigar boxes arranged by strength, embody a rigid scientific order. He has advised the police on poisoning the French President, yet he accepts Father Brown's plea about Maggie MacNab and Todhunter with ironic sportsmanship, half amused, half contemptuous. His clash with the priest's radiantly unscientific common sense sets the story's real puzzle: which method actually sees the truth.
