First appearance: the wisdom of father brown
As a supporting figure in The Wisdom of Father Brown, Dr. Orion Hood is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The scientist who initially dismisses the case as trivial but becomes intrigued after Maggie's urgent report.
Dr. Orion Hood is the eminent specialist in moral disorders whose sea-front chambers, chained classics and cigar boxes arranged by strength, embody a rigid scientific order. He has advised the police on poisoning the French President, yet he accepts Father Brown's plea about Maggie MacNab and Todhunter with ironic sportsmanship, half amused, half contemptuous. His clash with the priest's radiantly unscientific common sense sets the story's real puzzle: which method actually sees the truth.
