# Admiral Pendragon — The Wisdom of Father Brown character guide

> Admiral Pendragon in The Wisdom of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Admiral, Pendragon

**First appearance:** 0009-the-perishing-of-the-pendragons

## Snapshot

A weathered seafaring patriarch whose family is dogged by a hereditary curse, he greets the mystery of his doomed lineage with the stubborn fatalism of an old salt.

## Who they are

Admiral Pendragon belongs to an old Cornish family whose men are said to die by drowning, a superstition he carries with the grim humor of a sailor who has outlived the sea's worst. When Father Brown visits his cliffside home, the admiral's mixture of bluff hospitality and uneasy dread makes him both host and suspect in a household where past and present crimes seem to converge. His fatalism and his tangled family loyalties give the tale its brooding, salt-soaked atmosphere and its central puzzle.
