The Call of the Wild
How The Wind in the Willows develops The Call of the Wild.
Both Mole and Rat experience a powerful, almost mystical longing for something beyond their daily lives, such as the distant piping that leads them to the island or the swallows' tales of the South.
Where it surfaces
- The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The piping music represents a primal, spiritual call that draws Rat and Mole away from their ordinary lives into a transcendent encounter with nature's divinity.
- Wayfarers All
The Sea Rat's tales awaken a deep, primal urge in Rat to abandon his settled life and journey to unknown shores, illustrating the powerful pull of adventure.
