> The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

## Answer

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame develops Freedom vs. Responsibility across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Characters grapple with the tension between the desire for carefree adventure (Toad's motorcar obsession) and the responsibilities of friendship, home, and community.

Toad's reckless pursuit of motorcar thrills clashes with his friends' efforts to impose responsibility.

Toad's reckless theft of a motorcar leads to imprisonment, and his escape highlights the tension between his desire for freedom and the consequences of his irresponsible actions.

Toad revels in his freedom after escaping, but his irresponsible actions (stealing the car, boasting) lead to pursuit and danger.
