Chapter 3
I: Expert Opinions
Old Wrykinians Trevor and Clowes visit the school and discuss the decline of the football team with current captain Allardyce. They also speak with master Mr. Seymour about rising tensions between the school and the town, particularly with an election approaching. The chapter ends with Clowes spotting Stanning sneaking out of his house at night.
Chapter 4
II: Sheen at Home
Sheen, a studious and timid boy at Wrykyn, is caught between his friendship with the popular Drummond and the manipulative Stanning. He chooses Drummond, leading to tension with Stanning, who pressures him to join risky nighttime excursions. Sheen declines, fearing expulsion, and resolves to focus on his studies for the Gotford scholarship.

III: Sheen Receives Visitors and Advice
Sheen is visited by Linton and Dunstable, who invite themselves to tea without being asked. Sheen, too polite to confront them, plays host. Drummond later arrives and criticizes Sheen for his passivity, urging him to assert himself. Drummond illustrates his point by ejecting a younger student from the bath, demonstrating the value of standing up for oneself.
