He lies to Ralph, then defends the lie as service, and speaks of a woman in the Want-ways whose favor he will not name aloud. His ambiguous loyalty keeps the reader — and Ralph — guessing whether he is betrayer, benefactor, or both. ## Relationships ### [Ralph of Upmeads](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/characters/ralph_of_upmeads) _rivalry_ Roger is a treacherous and deceitful antagonist who repeatedly schemes against Ralph, leading to conflict. ### [Ralph of Upmeads](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/characters/ralph_of_upmeads) _rivalry_ Roger is a treacherous and deceitful antagonist who repeatedly schemes against Ralph, leading to conflict. ### [Ralph of Upmeads](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/characters/ralph_of_upmeads) _rivalry_ Roger is a treacherous and deceitful antagonist who repeatedly schemes against Ralph, leading to conflict. ## In the story ### [XI: Now Must Ralph Ride for It](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/chapters/xi-now-must-ralph-ride-for-it) Roger of the Ropewalk, a carle who claims to have escaped Hampton, warns Ralph against going there and convinces him to head to the Burg. ### [XII: Ralph Entereth Into the Burg of the Four Friths](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/chapters/xii-ralph-entereth-into-the-burg-of-the-four-friths) Accompanies Ralph, speaks with the gate captain, and claims to be a masterless man seeking revenge. ### [XIV: What Ralph Heard of the Matters of the Burg of the Four Friths](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/chapters/xiv-what-ralph-heard-of-the-matters-of-the-burg-of-the-four-friths) Roger acts suspiciously, speaks loudly to cover the strangers' presence, and later pledges to follow Ralph. ### [How Ralph Departed from the Burg of the Four Friths](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_well_at_the_world_s_end_se/chapters/xv-how-ralph-departed-from-the-burg-of-the-four-friths) Wakes Ralph and leads him out of the Burg;
