## Snapshot

Melmotte's smooth City accomplice, a man whose name is spoken between clenched teeth once the great financier's schemes begin to crack.

## Who they are

Cohenlupe is the shadowy associate whose respectability Melmotte borrows and whose disappearance, when the Mexican Railway and the great house of cards begin to tremble, is the first clear signal that ruin is coming. He is not a man of grand gestures but of quiet arrangements, and his name in the mouths of City men carries both the promise of profit and the smell of fraud. His vanishing act forces Melmotte to face his creditors alone, and it is one of the hinges on which the novel's financial catastrophe turns.
