    The Water-Babies

    Tom, a young chimney-sweep, drowns and transforms into a water-baby, beginning his adventures in an underwater world where he learns moral lessons and encounters various creatures.

    I

    Tom, a young chimney-sweep, is sent to clean the chimneys at Harthover Place. He gets lost in the maze of chimneys and accidentally enters the bedroom of a little white lady, causing a commotion. A chase ensues involving the entire household, but Tom escapes into the moor. He is followed by a mysterious Irishwoman. Alone on the moor, Tom encounters various wildlife and marvels at the unfamiliar landscape.

    Chapter II

    Tom, exhausted and ill, is taken in by an old dame who gives him milk and bread. He tells her his story, and she puts him to bed in an outhouse. In a feverish, half-asleep state, Tom feels compelled to wash himself and wanders to a brook, where he falls in and is transformed into a water-baby. Meanwhile, Sir John Harthover organizes a search for Tom, following the bloodhound's trail to Lewthwaite Crag and eventually to the stream, where they find only Tom's clothes. The chapter ends with a narrative defense of the existence of water-babies.

  5. Chapter 5

    III

    Tom, now a water-baby, enjoys a clean and carefree existence in the water, forgetting his past life. He learns to understand and talk to water creatures but torments them out of mischief, facing consequences such as a caddis's rebuke and a trout's attack. An otter tells him about the great river and sea, sparking his desire to explore the wider world. After a failed attempt to travel downstream, he witnesses a dramatic thunderstorm.
