Communication with Animals
A central theme is the Doctor's unique ability to speak and understand animal languages, which allows him to learn from creatures like Polynesia, the Great Snail, and the fidgit, and to solve problems through interspecies cooperation.
Responsibility and Leadership
The Doctor reluctantly becomes king of Popsipetel and must balance his duties to his subjects with his personal calling as a naturalist, ultimately choosing to leave to pursue his broader work, highlighting the tension between leadership and personal freedom.
Friendship and Loyalty
The bonds between Tommy, the Doctor, Bumpo, and the animals are central, with characters like Polynesia and Jip showing unwavering loyalty, and the Doctor treating Tommy as a grown-up friend, fostering a sense of mutual respect and companionship.
Education and Curiosity
The book emphasizes learning through experience, as Tommy learns to read and write, the Doctor studies shellfish languages, and characters like Bumpo seek education from travel, contrasting formal schooling with practical, worldly knowledge.
Freedom vs. Confinement
Characters often struggle against restrictions, such as the Doctor's discomfort with royal ceremony, the fidgit's captivity in an aquarium, and the stowaways' desire to escape their pasts, underscoring a longing for autonomy and open horizons.
Kindness and Compassion
The Doctor's gentle nature is shown through his care for animals and people, such as helping the retriever dog read a letter, treating the sick in Popsipetel, and offering shelter to Luke and his wife, reflecting a theme of empathy across species.
Cultural Exchange and Understanding
The voyages bring encounters with diverse cultures, like the Spanish islanders of Monteverde and the Indians of Popsipetel, promoting mutual learning and respect, as seen when the Doctor teaches science while learning local wisdom from Long Arrow.
