# Miranda — The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle character guide

> Miranda in The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Poor Miranda, poor Miranda

**First appearance:** 0026-part-ii-ix-the-purple-bird-of-paradise

## Snapshot

A purple bird-of-paradise who flies vast distances to carry the Doctor news, only to be reduced to tears by a rude sparrow the moment she lands.

## Who they are

Miranda is the Doctor's long-range messenger, arriving exhausted from Brazil with word of Long Arrow and the wider world beyond Puddleby. Her sensitivity — one insult from Cheapside nearly sends her straight home — makes her a fragile but indispensable link in the Doctor's network of animal informants. She matters because her messages and her guidance steer the voyage toward Spidermonkey Island, and because her loyalty is offered freely, not owed.
