# Bumpo Kahbooboo — The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle character guide > Bumpo Kahbooboo in The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Bumpo, old Bumpo, Prince Bumpo, Fancy Bumpo **First appearance:** 0015-part-i-xii-a-traveler-arrives ## Snapshot An African prince who trades his kingdom's comforts for the Doctor's voyage, desperate to become the fairy-tale hero his reading has convinced him he must be. ## Who they are Bumpo is royalty who would rather chase a storybook Sleeping Beauty than sit on a throne, and he attaches himself to the Doctor's expedition with a cheerful, tearful persistence. His comic obsession with transforming his appearance — and his willingness to defy his father to help the Doctor escape — make him both a liability and a loyal friend. He matters because his romantic foolishness keeps testing the voyage's patience, and because his fate quietly answers whether a man can rewrite himself. ## Relationships ### [Doctor Dolittle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/doctor_dolittle) _friendship_ Bumpo is a loyal and enthusiastic companion to Doctor Dolittle, often joining him on voyages with great eagerness. ### [Long Arrow](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/long_arrow) _friendship_ Bumpo and Long Arrow become fast friends during their shared adventures, united by curiosity and good humor. ### [Doctor Dolittle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/doctor_dolittle) _friendship_ Bumpo is a loyal and enthusiastic companion to Doctor Dolittle, often joining him on voyages with great eagerness. ### [Doctor Dolittle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/doctor_dolittle) _friendship_ Bumpo is a loyal and enthusiastic companion to Doctor Dolittle, often joining him on voyages with great eagerness. ### [Long Arrow](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/characters/long_arrow) _friendship_ Bumpo and Long Arrow become fast friends during their shared adventures, united by curiosity and good humor. ## In the story ### [The Third Man](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-i-the-third-man) Crown Prince of Jolliginki, elegantly dressed but barefoot, visits and is accepted as the third crew member. ### [Our Troubles Begin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-iii-our-troubles-begin) Discovers Matthew Mugg as a stowaway and later finds Luke and his wife hiding under the Doctor's bunk. ### [Our Troubles Continue](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-iv-our-troubles-continue) Serves as the cook, reports the missing salt beef, and humorously suggests extreme solutions to the stowaway problem. ### [Polynesia Has a Plan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-v-polynesia-has-a-plan) Helps execute the plan by laying the table and locking the door. ### [The Bed-Maker of Monteverde](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-vi-the-bed-maker-of-monteverde) Suggests singing comic songs to earn money, but the Doctor dismisses the idea. ### [The Doctor's Wager](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-vii-the-doctor-s-wager) Introduces himself as the Crown Prince of Jolliginki and places a side bet of three-thousand pesetas with Don Enrique. ### [VIII: The Great Bullfight](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-viii-the-great-bullfight) Assists the Doctor with his costume and watches the bullfight from the stands. ### [We Depart in a Hurry](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iii-ix-we-depart-in-a-hurry) Collects the thrown jewelry, collects his bet from Don Enrique, and fends off the mob with a beam of wood. ### [The Fidgit's Story](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iv-ii-the-fidgit-s-story) Falls asleep at the wheel around two in the morning, leaving the ship to drift. ### [Bad Weather](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iv-iii-bad-weather) Mentioned as being woken by Polynesia to help prepare for the storm. ### [IV: Wrecked!](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iv-iv-wrecked) Heard singing African comic songs from the other wreckage, signaling their location. ### [Land!](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_voyages_of_doctor_dolittle_se/chapters/part-iv-v-land) Offers Tommy fresh water and ship's biscuit;
