# York Minster — The Voyage of the Beagle character guide

> York Minster in The Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** York

**First appearance:** 0013-x-tierra-del-fuego

## Snapshot

A Fuegian brought to England and returned home, he is fiercely jealous of Fuegia Basket and determined to marry her once they land.

## Who they are

York is the eldest and most watchful of the three Fuegians aboard, with eyes sharp enough to identify distant ships before any sailor. His jealousy over Fuegia Basket gives the small passenger group its quietest tension, a courtship unfolding under Darwin's notebook. He matters because his return, like Jemmy's, tests whether English manners can survive the voyage back.
