**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Rosas

## Snapshot

Argentina's formidable military governor, encountered on the pampas, whose campaigns against indigenous peoples shadow Darwin's overland journeys through the interior.

## Who they are

Rosas rules the Argentine plains with a soldier's grip, and Darwin crosses his territory while riding inland from the coast. He represents the violent frontier of South American nation-building, a counterpoint to the Beagle's quieter surveys. His presence reminds the reader that the voyage moves through contested land, not empty wilderness.
