# Fuegia Basket — The Voyage of the Beagle character guide

> Fuegia Basket in The Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Fuegia

**First appearance:** 0013-x-tierra-del-fuego

## Snapshot

A modest, quick-learning Fuegian girl who picks up Portuguese, Spanish, and English, and whose reserved charm draws York Minster's jealous attention.

## Who they are

Fuegia is the youngest of the three Fuegians carried to England and back, quiet but remarkably fast at languages, learning Portuguese and Spanish during brief shore stops. Her pleasing but sometimes sullen expression and York's possessiveness make her the still center of the passengers' small dramas. She matters because her return home raises the voyage's hardest question: what happens to a person taught to belong elsewhere?
