# Grimaud — The Vicomte de Bragelonne character guide > Grimaud in The Vicomte de Bragelonne by Alexandre Dumas. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** M. Grimaud, poor Grimaud, honest Grimaud **First appearance:** 0007-4-father-and-son ## Snapshot Athos's ancient, near-mute servant, whose few words carry the weight of a lifetime of silent devotion. ## Who they are Grimaud has served Athos so long that speech has become almost unnecessary between them, his loyalty expressed in a glance, a nod, a hand on a bridle. He watches the painful scene between Athos and Raoul over La Vallière with the stillness of furniture, yet nothing escapes him. In a novel full of schemers and talkers, Grimaud's silence is a kind of moral anchor, a reminder of the old, unglamorous fidelity on which the musketeers' world was built. ## In the story ### [Father and Son](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/4-father-and-son) Old servant; observes Raoul's growth with melancholy and is embraced by the young vicomte. ### [Remember!](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/16-remember) Leads Athos's horses, ready for the journey. ### [In Which Aramis Is Sought, and Only Bazin Is Found](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/17-in-which-aramis-is-sought-and-only-bazin-is-found) Mentioned as accompanying Athos on his journey; Blaisois notes that Grimaud would not break his word about going to Paris. ### [The Shares of Planchet and Company Rise Again to Par](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/30-the-shares-of-planchet-and-company-rise-again-to-par) Assists Athos in defending the house and later opens the door calmly after the siege ends. ### [Of the Embarrassment of Riches](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/34-of-the-embarrassment-of-riches) Lent by Athos to guard d'Artagnan's pistols and coffer. ### [How d’Artagnan Regulated the “Assets” of the Company Before He Established Its “Liabilities”](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/37-how-d-artagnan-regulated-the-assets-of-the-company-before-he-established-its-liabilities) Assists Athos in procuring horses for the journey to Paris. ### [A Passion](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/51-a-passion) Describes the voyage to England to Raoul using gestures and few words, revealing the danger Athos faced. ### [The Consent of Athos](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/90-the-consent-of-athos) Accompanies Raoul to Blois and is called by Athos to prepare the horses. ### [What Raoul Had Guessed](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/202-what-raoul-had-guessed) Observes the departure with unease, suspecting something is wrong. ### [Political Rivals](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/205-political-rivals) Loyal servant who deduces Athos's arrest and alerts Raoul, then helps him search for Athos. ### [In Which Porthos Is Convinced Without Having Understood Anything](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/206-in-which-porthos-is-convinced-without-having-understood-anything) Assists Raoul and Porthos in the pursuit, spots the carriage, and receives a smile from Athos. ### [In Which Porthos Thinks He Is Pursuing a Duchy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/232-in-which-porthos-thinks-he-is-pursuing-a-duchy) Mentioned as the comte's intendant who sets the price for the carriage hire. ### [Monsieur de Beaufort](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/234-monsieur-de-beaufort) Serves wine to the Duc de Beaufort and is visibly affected by Raoul's announcement, dropping the bottle in shock. ### [235: Preparations for Departure](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/235-preparations-for-departure) Tasked by Athos with preparing Raoul's equipment and taking the route to Paris. ### [Promises](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/240-promises) Volunteers to go with Raoul to Africa, showing deep loyalty and concern for both Athos and Raoul. ### [The Angel of Death](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/265-the-angel-of-death) Brings news of Raoul's death to Athos, then silently mourns his master. ### [The Last Canto of the Poem](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/chapters/267-the-last-canto-of-the-poem) Leads D'Artagnan to view the bodies of Athos and Raoul, showing the wounds. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/characters/grimaud - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicomte_de_bragelonne_se/characters
