# Sam Brattle — The Vicar of Bullhampton character guide > Sam Brattle in The Vicar of Bullhampton by Anthony Trollope. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Sam, Brattle, Young Brattle, Samuel Brattle **First appearance:** 0004-iii-sam-brattle ## Snapshot The miller's son, caught trespassing by the vicar one night, whose silence about his companions feeds every suspicion in the parish. ## Who they are Sam Brattle is a young man the Vicar once had high hopes for, hopes that have grown fainter over eighteen months of trouble. When Fenwick catches him in the parsonage garden and smashes his shoulder, Sam refuses to name the friends he was with, and the mystery of that night hardens into the parish's belief that the Vicar knows more than he will say. His mother and sister are among Fenwick's favourites, which is precisely why the Vicar is so reluctant to hand him to the constable. ## Relationships ### [Mr. Fenwick](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/characters/mr_fenwick) _friendship_ Fenwick is a compassionate mentor and friend to the troubled Sam, striving to reform and protect him. ### [George Brattle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/characters/george_brattle) _family_ George is Sam's older brother, who feels a mix of anger and protective responsibility for Sam's wayward behavior. ### [Mr. ### [Mr. Fenwick](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/characters/mr_fenwick) _friendship_ Fenwick is a compassionate mentor and friend to the troubled Sam, striving to reform and protect him. ## In the story ### [The Vicar of Bullhampton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/the-vicar-of-bullhampton) George Brattle's son, already associated with suspicion and trouble. ### [Sam Brattle](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/iii-sam-brattle) Captured by Fenwick while lurking with accomplices; released with a stern warning about his future. ### [The Miller](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/v-the-miller) Mentioned as a former favorite of Mr. Fenwick, now idle and disobedient, causing trouble for the family. ### [VI: Brattle's Mill](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/vi-brattle-s-mill) Discussed as having been seen with two ruffians near the vicarage; not present at the mill. ### [The Miller's Wife](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/vii-the-miller-s-wife) Absent from home; last seen two days prior; reportedly went to Lavington; Fenwick fears he is involved with thieves. ### [The Last Day](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/viii-the-last-day) Mentioned as not having been home last night; believed to have been involved with two men in a cart passing through Paul's Hinton. ### [Crunch'em Can't Be Had](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/x-crunch-em-can-t-be-had) Has returned home and is assisting his father with mill repairs, but his recent activities remain suspicious. ### [XI: Don’t You Be Afeard About Me](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xi-don-t-you-be-afeard-about-me) Defiantly working on the mill roof, refuses to heed Fenwick's warnings about his criminal associates. ### [XII: Bone'm and His Master](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xii-bone-m-and-his-master) Under suspicion for Trumbull's murder; admits to being out the night of the crime. ### [Cousinhood](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xiv-cousinhood) Suspected of involvement in the murder; has been committed by the magistrates; his sister Fanny defends him. ### [The Police at Fault](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xv-the-police-at-fault) Remanded to gaol for a third week; police still lack direct evidence against him. ### [The Marquis of Trowbridge](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xvii-the-marquis-of-trowbridge) Subject of the dispute; expected to be released from prison for lack of evidence, but the Marquis wants him banished. ### [Sam Brattle Returns Home](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xix-sam-brattle-returns-home) Discharged from court but initially hesitant to leave; refuses money from Fenwick but agrees to go home to the mill. ### [What the Fenwicks Thought About It](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_vicar_of_bullhampton_se/chapters/xxii-what-the-fenwicks-thought-about-it) Has disappeared after working hard at the mill for a fortnight.
