# Mr. Puddleham — The Vicar of Bullhampton character guide

> Mr. Puddleham in The Vicar of Bullhampton by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Puddleham, poor Puddleham, dear old Puddleham

**First appearance:** 0036-xxxv-mr-puddleham-s-new-chapel

## Snapshot

The Methodist minister whose long-suppressed grievance against the Vicar finally finds an outlet in a chapel built almost on Fenwick's doorstep.

## Who they are

For years Puddleham has been disarmed by Fenwick's peaches and cabbages, robbed of the righteous quarrel that gave his ministry its edge. When the Marquis offers to build him a Bethel facing the Vicarage gate, he seizes the chance to become a somebody again. His rivalry with Fenwick is comic on the surface and corrosive underneath, driving the parish feud that shadows the novel's gentler plots.
