## Who they are

Mr. Tivett is the lively, coquettish bachelor who saves Mrs. Fotheringay's Mechlin and secures the belle of the ball's first waltz in the same evening — a man whose small vanities make him indispensable to the social machinery. He is the one who introduces Vansittart to Miss Marchant, and his shrewd little aside that 'the puss is an arrant flirt' plants the first seed of doubt about Eve's understanding with the black-bearded Sefton. In the early-middle arc he is the comic hinge on which the central courtship turns, and a barometer of the ballroom's opinion.
