## Snapshot

A gracious matriarch whose social standing and watchful kindness make her a quiet arbiter of the marriages forming around her.

## Who they are

Lady Hartley moves through the novel's drawing-rooms as a figure of established grace, the kind of woman whose approval or hesitation can make or unmake a match. Her warmth toward the young people around her is genuine, but it is filtered through the instincts of a woman who knows exactly what a family's name is worth. In the early-middle arc she helps set the social weather — the standard against which Eve Marchant's dubious connections are measured, and the quiet pressure that shapes how the betrothal is received.
