Chapter 1
In the City by the Sea
Jack Vansittart, a wealthy young Englishman, spends a Carnival day in Venice. He meets Lisa Vivanti and her aunt, la Zia, at a concert hall on the Lido and brings them back to Venice. They dine on macaroni at a modest restaurant, where Lisa tells him about her past in a lace factory and her current education in music, funded by a mysterious English gentleman. Vansittart is amused and fascinated by her beauty and vitality, but not in love. After dinner, they go to the Piazza, where he buys her trinkets from a bazaar and a dagger for himself. The chapter establishes Vansittart's idle, pleasure-seeking lifestyle and his dim foreshadowing of future domestic obligations.
Chapter 2
Afterthoughts
Jack Vansittart reflects on the consequences of his fatal encounter in Venice, worrying about Fiordelisa's fate and his own safety. He lands in Marseilles, reads a newspaper account of the brawl, and resolves to conceal his involvement. He returns to London, where he discusses society matters with his sister Maud, who has been presented at court and is being courted by Sir Hubert Hartley. Vansittart considers the impact of the scandal on his family and plans to maintain his innocence.
Chapter 3
III: “Fairies!”
Nearly three years after the fatal night in Venice, Jack Vansittart spends Christmas at Redwold Towers with his mother and sister Maud, now married to Sir Hubert Hartley. The chapter explores Jack's lingering guilt over the death in Venice, his attempts to bury it, and the social dynamics of the house party, including Miss Green's eccentricities and Maud's reflections on her marriage.
Chapter 4
The Prelude to Some Brighter World
At a ball, Vansittart seeks an introduction to Miss Marchant, using Mr. Tivett to facilitate the meeting. He dances with her and is captivated, while also fulfilling his social obligations to the Champernownes and Miss Green. He finally secures a quiet supper with Eve, where they begin a more intimate conversation, contrasting her simple tastes with the affectations of high society.
Chapter 5
Teatime in Arcadia
Vansittart, haunted by the memory of Eve Marchant, spends ten days searching for her after the ball at Mandelford. Unable to find her, he decides to call at the Homestead, where he finds the Marchant sisters at tea. The unconventional, Bohemian household charms him, and he is particularly captivated by Eve's beauty and the simplicity of their life, which contrasts sharply with his own conventional upbringing.
