## Who they are

Douglas wins the village with his fearlessness and open hand, but his wife is twenty years younger, oddly watchful, and visibly strained whenever he is late. His old friend Barker is the only link to the American years he left behind, and even the servants notice the husband's irritation at that friendship. The danger he seems to have fled follows him into the moat-ringed manor, and his death becomes the puzzle Holmes must unpick.
